Number Train is a free place value game for children ages 6–9. Load single blocks, rods worth ten, and squares worth one hundred. In the final trail, trade groups of ten without changing the total.
How to play
- Choose Tens and ones, Hundreds too, or Trade groups of ten.
- Use the wagon controls to add or remove blocks. A single block is one, a rod is ten, and a square is one hundred.
- In the trade trail, exchange ten ones for one ten or ten tens for one hundred. Check when the total matches and each wagon has fewer than ten pieces.
A worked example
Build 42 with four tens and two ones: 40 + 2 = 42. Trading ten single blocks for a rod changes the pieces, but their value stays ten.
Three trails to explore
- Sprout: build two-digit numbers with tens and ones.
- Explorer: build three-digit numbers, including zero in a place.
- Whiz: regroup ten ones as a ten and ten tens as a hundred.
What to notice
A zero holds a place. In 204 there are two hundreds, zero tens, and four ones. Moving the 2 into the tens wagon would make it worth 20 rather than 200.
A little help when it matters
Every game has a step-by-step “How to play” guide, optional spoken instructions, and hints that explain mistakes. Five challenges earn a medal saved on the device. There are no time limits or penalties for trying again.
Try this together
Ask “What changed? What stayed the same?” after a trade. The number of pieces changes, but their total value does not.
